Explained..
The Severnside Achievement in Recycling Awards identify and reward both organisations and the individuals within organisations
who have achieved, through working with Severnside, excellence in the area of sustainable recycling and waste management.
The evening is aimed at awarding the corporate organisations who have achieved excellence in recycling, whilst the afternoon event is about recognising the individuals within those organisations that have gone the extra mile to make recycling a success in their workplace.
Now in its seventh year, the Severnside Achievement in Recycling Awards highlight the successes of many of our customers and business partners, demonstrating that sustainable waste management practice has positive effects on the environment and the bottom line.

Awards for Personal Commitment to Recycling
The Awards for Personal Commitment to Recycling has just one category but with many winners. The Recycling Champions Award recognises the achievements of the individuals behind the recycling success of their overall organisations. These awards recognise their contribution towards making recycling in the workplace a success by commitment and excellence in the operational, procedural and communicational aspects of their work.
The Recycling Champions Award
Who’s it for? Individual Award
When is it? Daytime Award Ceremony
What is it? Winners, whether individuals, teams or whole sites will stand out as staff who have considered all the issues associated with recycling at their workplace. They will have gone the extra mile and demonstrated excellence in contributing to the success of recycling in their working environment.
Previous award winners for this category include Tracey Smith (Tesco), Clare Jenkins (Sovereign Land), Next Retail (Swindon) and Wilkinsons (Magor).
Awards for Organisational Commitment to Recycling
The Awards for organisational commitment to recycling identify and honour organisations involved with Severnside who have integrated recycling and other sustainable waste management techniques into the heart of their business practice.
The Best Commitment to Change Business Practice Award
Who’s it for? Corporate Award
When is it? Evening Award Ceremony
What is it? Sometimes radical change of tried and tested working practice is needed to implement and improve new and existing recycling initiatives. This award seeks to highlight customers that have been prepared to take on and develop new business practice in the interest of maximising the recyclate harvested from their waste stream.
The Landfill Diversion Technology Award (New Award!)
Who’s it for? Corporate Award
When is it? Evening Award Ceremony
What is it? Reduce, Reuse, Recycle is the mantra. However, not all materials can be recycled or even reused. Are we to confine these streams to landfill then? If we are to move forward in our goal of maximum diversion from landfill then special attention has to be given to waste arisings that cannot easily be recycled. These could be streams directly not suitable for recycling, or materials that are contaminated to such a degree that recycling is not a realistic option. This new award seeks to recognise Severnside business partners who have significantly contributed to the landfill alternatives available to our customers
The Retail Recycling Initiative Award
Who’s it for? Corporate Award
When is it? Evening Award Ceremony
What is it? The retail sector deserves specific focus with regards to waste management and recycling for two reasons; Firstly, the sector produces significant waste from its activities so organisations that ensure diversion from landfill, potentially over thousands of sites, deserve recognition. Secondly, and uniquely, retailers can also potentially ‘Create’ significant quantities of waste by the nature of the packaging around the goods they sell. This award seeks to award retailers who see both these issues equally and have worked to minimise the impacts of these wastes, particularly through staff and customer involvement and innovation.
The SME Recycling Success Award (New Award!)
Who’s it for? Corporate Award
When is it? Evening Award Ceremony
What is it? So often, awards ceremonies will pay due attention only to the accomplishments of their larger, national customers; this is not the case with Severnside! Traditionally, it has been seen as notoriously more difficult for small to medium organisations to be successful in reducing waste to landfill and excelling in recycling and recovery processes. Segregation at site processes and volume of material have all been limitations faced by SME’s in the recent past. This new award highlights the successes of small to medium sized organisations in terms of their recycling achievements through Severnside’s innovations to make recycling and recovery far more accessible to all organisations whether large or small.
The Recycling Partnership Award
Who’s it for? Corporate Award
When is it? Evening Award Ceremony
What is it? As environmental legislation becomes more demanding, more and more organisations are exploring different projects to increase the amount of recyclate they can divert from landfill. Experience has shown that involving larger groups of stakeholders in sustainable waste management initiatives positively impacts on our environment. Larger stake holder groups may be organisational employees (such as focus groups), special interest groups, and the wider community as a whole. This award aims to reward the initiative behind such projects.
The Sustainable Environment Award (New Award!)
Who’s it for? Corporate Award
When is it? Evening Award Ceremony
What is it? Most environmental and economic benefits are achieved when organisations adopt a holistic approach to their waste management practices including a strategic view on the full life cycle of the material from purchase to disposal. This new award seeks to identify those customers who have achieved, or are working towards achieving, sustainability in all aspects of their environmental impact.
The Letsrecycle.com Award
Who’s it for? Corporate Award
When is it? Evening Award Ceremony
What is it? Letsrecycle.com, award supporters of the Severnside Achievement in Recycling Awards, contribute and host their own award category at the event. The winner will encompass an overall excellence in recycling and sustainability through working with Severnside.
Please note that The Letsrecycle.com Award is not open for nominations, the winner will be selected from the overall entries to all other awards.
